Become a CERTLOC Certified Locator

To help candidates prepare for certification, we provide a free Candidate Manual and online self-assessment, access to resources such as Technical Tips for Certified Locators and in our new Trainee Locator Development Program, modules that focus on critical aspects of the job.

Candidates must read the Candidate Manual before completing the Self-Assessment and subsequently enrolling, to understand what to expect from the practical assessment and decide if they are ready to enrol. Enrolment into the Program must be completed before candidates can attempt and pass the theory assessment and book in for their practical assessment.

They will be asked if they would like to enrol in the Certified Locator Program after they have successfully completed the self-assessment. Multiple opportunities are available for locators to undertake their practical assessment throughout the year.

Becoming a Certified Locator involves reading the Candidate Manual, passing an online theory assessment and practical field assessment, conducted by an industry expert. During the practical assessment a candidate must present appropriate equipment (see the Required Equipment List) and demonstrate expertise in locating techniques to accepted industry standards.

The assessment fee is $1,295 + GST.

Self-Assessment

The first step in the process is to read the online Candidate Manual. Once this is done you can complete our free online Self-Assessment. Here, you will be asked a series of questions about your expertise.

The Self-Assessment will help you understand what areas you will be assessed on during the Theory and Practical Assessment components of the Certified Locator Program. If there are criteria within the Self-Assessment where you are not confident, it is not in your interest to enrol into the program until you have increased your expertise in those areas (or have all the required equipment); otherwise, you may find you do not pass the assessments.

Once the Self-Assessment has been successfully completed, you will be asked to formally enrol in the Certified Locator Program and pay the assessment fee. Enrolment into the Program must be completed before you can attempt and pass the theory assessment and book in for your practical assessment. After successful enrolment, you will receive an email with log-in details, so you can proceed to the Theory Assessment.

Contact us on  [email protected] or call 1300 340 017 if you have any questions.

Theory Assessment

Once you receive an email with log-in details to access the Theory Assessment, you can log in and attempt the assessment when it suits you.

Please allow at least 1 hour to complete the Theory Assessment.

The online Theory Assessment contains 70 multiple-choice questions about locating.  You need to score at least 96% within two attempts to proceed to the next stage. If you are successful, you will be contacted by CERTLOC to schedule your practical assessment or you can book a Practical Assessment date, by clicking on 'Book a Practical Assessment'.

If you have any questions or need further information you can call 1300 340 017.

Requirements

To undertake the Theory Assessment, please ensure you have a functional webcam and are not using Internet Explorer.

Practical Assessment

Prior to undertaking the Practical Assessment, please ensure you have all the required equipment. See the online 'Required Equipment List' which is also in the Candidate Manual. You will be required to acknowledge that you have read the Candidate Manual at the practical assessment. During the practical field assessment, an Assessor will evaluate your ability to identify underground assets/utilities by performing locating procedures to accepted industry standards. At the practical assessment you must present with all the required equipment.

The practical assessment will be conducted by an assessor at a selected field location. Once the location date and time have been agreed, if you don’t proceed with the assessment, cancellation fees may apply (refer to terms and conditions).

If you successfully complete your Practical Assessment, you will be recognised as a CERTLOC Certified Locator. You will receive a CERTLOC Certified Locator Certificate, which confirms you have successfully completed the Certified Locator Program.

Sometimes less knowledgeable locators don’t successfully complete the Practical Assessment. We work closely with them so they can undertake a reassessment with the goal of achieving certification (there is a minimum one month waiting period).
